Necessary Lies

Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain

♥♥♥♥♥ – 5 heart rating

What to say about this book other than it is one that you certainly will remember for quite a while! It is fictional, yet historical facts come into play as it was set in the 1960s in North Carolina and racial tension and state mandated sterilization are heavy in the air.  The author weaves a catching storyline centered on a family who lives in the rural county and do not have access to many of the resources that Jane, one of our narrators, does.  Jane is a newly appointed social worker, and rather green behind the ears, so with her narrative she really allows the reader to feel the emotions behind assisting these clients who are in great need.  Meanwhile, Jane is faced with a marriage that well – is pretty stereotypical of the one society expects for the 1960s.  Themes in this book include love, loss, and finding one’s inner strength to prevail. I recommend this book to you first because it has left such an impression on me.
